This year I bring the end of the year a bit early. Because this year, in addition to a "year in review", I will also get to post a "decade in review", and I should make space for it.

Seventh grade openhouse

Recently, I went to my son's 7th grade openhouse. It was a nice setup. They made me follow my son's daily routine, visiting the same classrooms in the same order, but with 10 minute class time where the teachers gave information about what they would be doing this year. Overall I am impressed by what I saw and heard. My main takeaways was that the school has embraced a hands-on learning curriculum, and is making very good/wise use of technology. My impression from Math, Science, ELA classes was that, the middle school is using the flipped-classroom model to a great extent. There is little lecturing and a lot of group work. The science class presentation was exciting. Instead of memorizing, the class emphasizes hypothesizing, testing, and reasoning. Art class also sounded exciting. They added new media modules. This is not surprising given that half the 12 years old population list being a YouTuber as their career choice. The art teacher said that their goal is to get the stude

In the Plex: How Google Thinks, Works, and Shapes Our Lives (Steven Levy, 2011)

I read this book recently. Going into this, I knew I wouldn't learn many new/surprising things. After all, I have been following Google from outside since 1999. After I saw Google in action, I had switched to it immediately. I was quick to get on board with Gmail as well, and followed many Google services over the years. I have seen things.   As I anticipated, I didn't find many surprises in the book. But I liked the book nevertheless. It is always nice to read stuff from Steven Levy.  Steven Levy is one of my favorite authors. I have a dog-eared copy of the Hackers book he wrote. It was excellent writing. So much research went into each character in the book, and he made each character come alive. He also weaved the narration together artistically around a handful of themes and related new information/events back to these themes. He had put a lot of his interpretation and insight in to the facts/narrative, and I really enjoyed that.  This book is not as colorful. It has a raw
